Canon lenses as storytellers

Canon 15-85mm camera lens

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt on the camera launches I’ve been lucky enough to attend, is that while a good eye can spot an opportunity, a good lens, or, even better, a good variety of lenses, can help you get the shot.

Canon has released a new video to illustrate this, pairing Master Photographer Graham Munro with singer Guy Sebastian. They travel together to three locations, armed with four Canon lenses, and ten minutes in which to work. Generally speaking they have one lens each to suit sport, landscape, macro, and portrait photo opportunities.

At the time of writing, Canon has a range of 71 lenses. For the purposes of this video, the following lenses were used:

  • Landscape – EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
  • Macro – EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
  • Portrait – EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
  • Sport – EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Rather than chop and change when I’m taken somewhere to test a new camera, I like to go for something of an all-rounder of a lens – it’s not a fear of lens, more a fear of dropping an expensive lens in the sand, or on rocks. Something like Canon’s EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens is what I usually go for. As mentioned above, I find it versatile, and with a physical size that is manageable and keeps the camera well-balanced. It’s with a lens like this that I captured the sunset image below, that is probably the best landscape shot I’ve ever taken.
