Back to the Future trilogy soon to fly on to Blu-ray

Back to the Future

Back to the Future

The first ‘Back to the Future‘ film debuted in the cinemas all the way back in the past that was 26 October, 1985. Twenty-five years later that film, and the two sequels it spawned, the creatively-titled ‘Back to the Future Part II’ and ‘Back to the Future Part III’, are going on sale in high definition Blu ray format. That’s 88 miles an hour DeLorean on your 1080p screens!

Highlights, apart from the always enjoyable three films are:

  • Tales from the Future: New six-part retrospective documentary featuring interviews with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Director Robert Zemeckis, Producers Bob Gale and Neil Canton, plus Executive Producer Steven Spielberg
  • The Physics of Back To The Future: A discussion with celebrity best-selling author and physicist Dr. Michio Kaku about the overall appreciation of the science in the Back to the Future Trilogy – wonder if it includes instructions for a build-it-yourself flux capacitor?
  • The Secrets of the Back to the Future Trilogy: a televised special hosted by Kirk Cameron addressing fans unanswered Back to the Future questions – Kirk Cameron? Now there’s a ‘whatever happened to?’! I hope that’s one of the questions.

Interactive Blu-ray bonus features

I don’t know about you, but one reason I like Blu-ray, apart from the better picture and sound, is that the greater storage capacity on the disk means more stuff! Not only more stuff, with Blu-ray players that have internet connectivity, you can gain access to content and features not on the disk, but out there on the web.

On this ‘Back to the Future’ 25th Anniversary disc the interactive Blu-ray bonus features include:

  • U-CONTROL: Universal’s exclusive feature allows viewers to learn more about their favorite film without ever leaving the movie.
  • Setups & Payoffs: As you watch each of the three films, each “set up” showcases items in the scene that prepare you for a future plot point. When you get to that moment in the film, the “payoff” is shown.
  • Storyboard Comparison: Compare key scenes in the movie with the original storyboards.
  • Trivia Track: Pull up trivia and facts while you watch the movies.
  • BD-LIVE: Access the BD-Live Centre through your internet-connected player to get even more content, watch the latest trailers and more.
  • pocket BLU:Universal’s own tech. Uses iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Blackberry, Android, Windows and Macintosh computers and more to work seamlessly with a network-connected Blu-ray player and offers advanced features such as:
    • Advanced Remote Control: A sleek, elegant new way to operate your Blu-ray player. Navigate through menus, playback and BD-Live functions with ease.
    • Video Timeline: Easily bring up the video timeline, allowing you to instantly access any point in your favourite episode.
    • Mobile-To-Go: Unlock a selection of bonus content with your Blu-ray discs to save to a device or to stream from anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi network, enabling exclusive content on the go, anytime, anywhere.
    • Browse Titles: Access to a complete list of pocket BLU-enabled titles available and coming to Blu ray. Watch free previews and see what additional content is available to unlock.

There’s a lot more on offer, mini documentaries, behind the scenes material, alternate ending storyboards, music videos and more.

Price and availability

As stated at the top of this article, the ‘Back to the Future’ 25th Anniversary Blu-ray edition has a worldwide release date of 27 October, 2010. So with our little position on the International Date Line, the movie goes on sale in Australia a little ahead of most of the world.

Price? Well that hasn’t been released yet, so watch this space!
