New from Fitbit: Sense, Versa 3, Inspire 2

Fitbit Sense with sport band

Fitbit has added three new fitness trackers to its range – the Sense, Versa 3, and Inspire 2.

As you can see in the images, Fitbit has stayed very much with the design template introduced with the original Versa for the brand new Sense and the third edition of the Versa, while the Inspire 2 is another of the company’s slimline designs.

All three new Fitbits will go on sale in September 2020, but are available for pre-order from the Fitbit site now.

Fitbit Sense

The top-of-the-range of this new trio of trackers is the Fitbit Sense. In looks it is like a slightly chunkier version of the Versa, but what really sets this model apart from all other Fitbits is the fact that it has an electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor, allowing it to pick up data such as stress levels and heart rate tracking. A new ECG app on the Sense will do just as the name says, providing an electrocardiogram readout, and add your heart rhythm health to the many points of health data.

Another new tile on the screen is to measure stress, providing a score from 1 to 100, based on heart rate, sleep and activity data.

Subscribers to the Fitbit Premium service will be provided additional data picked up from the EDA sensor, including ‘… exertion balance (impact of activity), responsiveness (heart rate, heart rate variability and electrodermal activity from the EDA Scan app), and sleep patterns (sleep quality).’

Another new party trick on the Sense is for user to place their palm of their hand on the screen, and the device will ‘… detect small electrical changes in the sweat level of your skin,’ another tool to help you measure, or understand, your stress levels.

And of course the Sense does all the regular Fitbit things, such as counting steps, floors climbed, sleep hours and quality, and more. It also can be used as a contactless payment device,  has a built-in speaker and microphone to take calls and reply to texts with voice commands, and a choice of choice of Amazon Alexa or Google voice assistants.

The RRP of the Fitbit Sense is set at $499.95. It will be available in two colours: Carbon/Graphite Stainless Steel, and Lunar White/Soft Gold Stainless Steel.

Versa 3

We’re into the third edition of the Versa, and to the eye it looks very much the same as the model’s predecessors. But what has been added to the latest Versa is GPS.

The Versa too, like the Sense, has a speaker and microphone to take calls and reply to texts with voice commands.

Fitbit has become something of a cottage industry as regards the many and varied battery charging cable and attachments, a different arrangement for every model, so it’s good news that the Sense and the Versa 3 use the same type of charger.

And in perhaps the best news of all, the new Versa has a new, easier method for attaching the watchband. I don’t know about you, but every time I have had to take the watchband off my Versa for cleaning or replacement I swear like a trooper at it as I have something 15 attempts to re-attach the damn thing!

The RRP of the Versa 3 is $399.95. It will be available in three colours: Midnight/Soft Gold Aluminum (that’s American for aluminium!), Black/Black Aluminum (stop it America!), and Pink Clay/Soft Gold Aluminum (ibid).

Inspire 2

Last, and well least in this lineup, is the latest incarnation of the Fitbit Inspire. It’s a tried and tested design, thin, low profile, for those that don’t like a chunky looking and feeling tracker on their wrist.

Actually, you don’t even have to wear the Inspire 2 on your wrist. The screen component separates from the band, allowing you to slip it into a black clip (available separately for $19.95) that you can clip onto clothes or a belt, or slip into your pocket. It’s a throwback to an old model, the Fitbit One.

Attractive too is the 10-day battery life, thanks to the low-fi screen and feature set.

The RRP of the Inspire 2 is $179.95. it will be available in three colours: Black, Lunar White, and Desert Rose (aka pink).
