Hohrizontal 51 soundboard – the shelf that’s a speaker

Hohrizontal 51 speaker shelf, black

We’ve seen furniture and audio together before, such as the Sonic Chair, but in the Hohrizontal 51 soundboard we see a shelf with inbuilt speakers, and an iPod dock… a novel – and – neat, sound solution. So neat, it has won a swag of awards, including a prestigious red dot design award in 2011.

The Hohrizontal 51 is made by finite elemente, a German manufacturer. Inside the body of the shelf are two 50 watt speakers, connectible via a 30-pin iPod dock, or, for the non iDevices, a stereo line in or mini USB for audio, or, for connection to a TV, a composite video output. The addition of the stereo line in allows connection of non-Apple portable media players.

The specs on the sort of load bearing you can expect from the Hohrizontal 51 varies, being dependent upon the quality and materials of the wall, so finite elemente put the possible load at between 10 and 25 kilograms.

The Hohrizontal 51 is available in a choice of 6 high-gloss lacquer colours – red, white, anthracite, cobalt, mallow, black, walnut. Overseas it is priced from 178 Euros.
