Lego Volkswagen T1 Camper Van – blocky motoring nostalgia

You gotta love Lego. Founded in Denmark in 1932, famous the world over, and still kicking out cool stuff for the kids and the kids-at-heart. Case in point, this new product from the blocky geniuses, the Lego Volkswagen T1 Camper Van.

This is a Lego representation of a car that was released in 1962. Look at the pictures below, and you’ll see that Lego has not only put in a decent stab at authenticity on the outside, there’s quite a good amount of detail on the inside. Open the door at the back, and there’s the VW air-cooled flat four cylinder boxer engine. Look inside, and there’s a folding rear bench seat, folding dinette table, closet with mirror, a painting, front cabin bench seat, gear stick, angled dashboard and the spherical speedometer of the real thing.

The Lego Volkswagen T1 Camper Van went on sale overseas on October 1. The US price of the kit is US$169.99.

Want a better look at the Lego Volkswagen T1 Camper Van? Here’s a video from the model’s designer, on LegoClubTV.

It gives a history of the original car, and how the quirky and technical design features of the car leant itself to a Lego interpretation, along with some difficulties the complexity of the car brought to making the model.

Stick with the video, it is a nice, detailed look at the model.
