Apple has overnight announced details of a revamp to the MacBook Air range, with two sizes now available, along with a complete switchover to solid state flash memory.
The all-new, still aluminium unibody MacBook Air is available in 11-inch and 13-inch models. At the thinnest point the new MacBook Airs are 0.3 centimetres thick, moving up to 1.7 centimetres at the thickest point. The 11-inch model weighs 1.06 kilograms, while the 13-inch model weighs 1.3 kilograms.
The use of solid state flash memory enables instant on for the MacBook Air, faster data access, and frees up space for a bigger battery. The new battery provides up to 5 hours use of the 11-inch model using Wi-Fi, and up to 7 hours on the 13-inch.
Included in the box is the MacBook Air, 45W MagSafe power adapter, AC wall plug and power cord, printed and electronic documentation, and a Software Reinstall Drive.
“MacBook Air is the first of a new generation of notebooks that leaves behind mechanical rotating storage in favour of solid state flash storage,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve taken what we have learned with the iPad – solid state storage, instant-on, amazing battery standby time, miniaturisation and lightweight construction, to create the new MacBook Air.”
