Selected Samsung TVs, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems now are capable of carrying 7 new BigPond TV channels.

If you’ve been so lucky as to purchase a Samsung internet-capable TV, Blu-ray player or home theatre system, then as of now you have 7 new channels to watch, courtesy of BigPond TV.

Those new channels are:

  • 24/7 news
  • AFL
  • NRL
  • V8 Supercars
  • 24/7 BigPond Sports News
  • Live horse racing from Sydney and Melbourne
  • BPM music

These Samsung devices will also be the first to use technology from Widevine, that works to optimise the streaming content according to the speed and reliability of the broadband that the devices are connected to, eliminating problems with buffering. The Widevine company was by the way acquired by Google in early December 2010.

“Launching BigPond TV direct to Samsung devices over the internet using Widevine’s adaptive streaming technology is a world first,” Ben Kinealy, head of Telstra IPTV, said.

“Our BigPond TV audience is growing and now in partnership with Samsung, more people will have access to our great content. News, sports and our music video channel, BPM, which is one of our most popular channels, all have rapidly growing audiences. BigPond TV is available unmetered for most BigPond broadband customers,” said Mr Kinealy.
