Sony’s next footsoldier in the battle to have you upgrade from a point-and-shoot digital camera, to something approaching the creative possibilities of a digital SLR camera, is the NEX-5R.
The Sony NEX-5R is one of the new(ish) mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. This will be Sony’s first such camera to have inbuilt Wi-Fi, and the first to have apps on board. At launch, apps will include Picture Effect+; Bracket Pro; Multi Frame NR; Photo Retouch; Smart Remote Control and Direct Upload. Following the initial release will be Time-lapse and Cinematic Photo.
But, back to the camera. The NEX-5R will be a 16.1 megapixel camera, ISO 100 – 25600 for still images, a 180-degree touchscreen, 99 focus points (phase-detection AF) / 25 focus points (contrast-detection AF), 16 in-camera picture effects ( Posterisation (Colour and B/W), Pop Colour, Retro Photo, Partial Colour (R,G,B,Y), High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft High-key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature).
The NEX-5R uses an E-mount lens system. It can also use A-mount lenses with the optional adaptor (continuous AF supported with LA-EA2). Lenses on sale at release will be the E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS; E 55-210mm F4-6.3 OSS; E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS; E 24mm F1.8ZA Sonnar T.
Sony NEX-5R price and release date
The NEX-5R is marked for a November release in Australia. The camera body only will sell for $799 RRP, while the single-lens kit (with an 18-55mm lens) will cost $999 RRP, and the twin-lens kit (18-55mm and 55-210mm) will be $1299 RRP.
