TDK Sound Cube – 4 speakers of go-anywhere sound

TDK Sound Cube

TDK Sound Cube

Strictly speaking, the TDK Sound Cube is not an iPod Dock, rather it is an iPod, or other portable music player, speaker. The iPod doesn’t fit inside a dock and become part of this speaker, instead on the TDK Sound Cube it sits on a non-slip surface on top of the unit.

The TDK Sound Cube, like the 2 and 3 Speaker Boombox, is part of TDK’s Life on Record audio range.

A cube just shy 30 cm, the TDK Sound Cube packs a speaker on four of its sides, pumping out 20 Watts RMS. Inputs are a USB port, audio jack, and an audio line-in (RCA phono x 2). Cables included in the box include a 30-pin cable for iPhone or iPod, and a 3.5 mm audio cable. Also built in is a FM radio, and music player to bust out tunes from a USB flash drive.

All the controls are on the front of the Sound Cube – audio source, station preset, playback control, volume button, radio tuning, etc. And just like the 2 Speaker and 3 Speaker Boombox, in a nod to This Is Spinal Tap the volume knob goes up to 11.

The TDK Sound Cube can be powered by mains or by battery. And when I say battery I mean 12 – yes, 12 – D-size batteries. As ever, batteries are not included.

TDK Sound Cube release date and price

The TDK Sound Cube will appear in Australian stores in late June, selling for $499.95. Or you could buy the Sound Cube online now for US$299.99.
