Will smart glass be our enemy?

A still from Corning's 'A Day Made of Glass' video

As I watched this Corning’s ‘A Day Made of Glass’ video (see below), I thought of two movies. Firstly, the scene in ‘The Graduate’:

  • Mr. McGuire: I want to say one word to you. Just one word.
  • Benjamin: Yes, sir.
  • Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
  • Benjamin: Yes, I am.
  • Mr. McGuire: Plastics.

In the movie scene in my head, plastics changes to ‘Glass’.

The second movie that comes to mind is ‘The Terminator’. The more Corning tells me about the many, many, many ideas they have for glass, the more I think of Cyberdyne Systems. With all of this smart glass in our future surely glass will get just a little too smart and before you know it the human race is fighting a smart glass army.

Anyway, my cinema-induced spidey sense aside, here’s an exercise in forward thinking by the boffins (and marketers) at Corning. It’s a mix of Minority Report/sci-fi, and Microsoft Surface. It’s ideas for home, work, car, outdoor signage, retail displays, mobile phones, TV and more.

The video is called ‘A Day Made of Glass’, and it runs for five-and-a-half minutes. Have a watch, and tell me what you think in the Leave a Reply section further down this page.
