So, a prototype of a PlayStation PSP Phone. Is it real? Will it really happen?
The tech blog Engadget produced the picture above, along with the following specs:
- 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 chip
- 512MB of RAM
- 1GB of ROM
- Android 3.0 Gingerbread operating system
- Screen size in the 3.7 to 4.1 inch range
- Multitouch touchpad (that’s it between the two sets of direction controls on the bottom section of the slide-out section
Engadget stand by the veracity of the pictures and the information, which comes not from tipsters, but from “people much more closely connected to the project”, a project apparently named ‘Zeus’. “Multiple, trusted sources” says Engadget.
So what do you think? I’m of the mind this is a product long overdue, and if done well, it will sell well. Are you sensing a ‘but’ coming? Here it is. The Sony PSPgo is a terrific little games device, but it is overpriced. So Sony getting the hardware right is a fair chance. Sony getting the hard sell right… that’s not so clear cut.
UPDATE: The day after I wrote this, Sony dropped the price of the PSPgo from $499 to $249.95 RRP. Perhaps there is yet hope for a well-priced PlayStation phone.
