Belkin brings a Thunderstorm of sound to the iPad

It’s been available for a couple of months in the US, and now the Belkin Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater has struck ground in Australia.

The Belkin Thunderstorm is a speaker dock system that fits around the iPad. Those speakers, and the free downloadable Thunder app, offer a big improvement over the iPad’s native speakers for your portable music, gaming and video pleasure. All the audio design in the Thunderstorm has been carried out by US firm Audifi.

“Belkin tapped us to engineer the sound performance of the Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater from the inside out and we’re happy to see end results. Through the design of core circuits, sound processing, custom speakers and a surprisingly thin acoustic enclosure, Audifi engineered a level of sonic depth and precision that was, until now, impossible to achieve in mobile devices.” said Bruce Lancaster, general manager and vice president at Audifi.

The Belkin Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater also uses a cover that both protects the screen and works as a stand – just like the Apple Smart Cover. The Thunder app provides preset soundscapes, one each for gaming, music and movie modes.

The first release of the Belkin Thunderstruck is compatible with the 30-pin connector of the iPad 2 and iPad 3rd generation models. An upcoming model will be compatible with the Apple Lightning connector in the near future.

The Belkin Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater is available in stores now, at an RRP of $249.95.
